Canada led the 2010 Olympic gold medal game against the United States 2-1 with under a minute left in regulation when Zach Parise scored to tie it, silencing a Vancouver arena that had believed the game was won. It forced sudden-death overtime in the biggest hockey game on Canadian soil in a generation.
Just over seven minutes into overtime, Jarome Iginla won a battle for the puck along the boards and slid a pass across the crease to Crosby, who beat American goaltender Ryan Miller with a quick shot into the far side of the net. Crosby was mobbed by teammates as the arena, and much of the country watching on television, erupted at once.
The win gave Canada gold in the sport they had invented and hosted, on home ice, in the tournament's final event, a scenario that could hardly have been better scripted. Crosby's goal, forever known simply as the Golden Goal, is widely considered the signature moment of his career and one of the defining moments in Canadian sporting history.
