The 1966 World Cup final finished level at 2-2 after ninety minutes, forcing extra time. In the 101st minute Geoff Hurst's shot struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced down; whether it had fully crossed the line was disputed in real time and has been argued over ever since, but the goal was given.
Hurst added a third in the final minute as spectators spilled onto the pitch, prompting commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme's famous line: 'some people are on the pitch, they think it's all over, it is now.' His goal completed the only hat-trick ever scored in a men's World Cup final.
Captain Bobby Moore lifted the Jules Rimet trophy for England in front of a home Wembley crowd. Six decades on it remains the country's only World Cup triumph, and the closing minutes of that final are still the most replayed footage in English football.
