Women's professional boxing had spent decades fighting for mainstream recognition when Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano were booked to headline a full Madison Square Garden card on 30 April 2022, the first time a women's bout had ever topped the bill at the venue in its history. Taylor, the undisputed lightweight champion, and Serrano, a seven-weight world champion, both had legitimate claims to being the sport's best pound-for-pound female fighter.

The fight itself lived up to the occasion, a fast, technically excellent, and closely contested bout that swung across all ten rounds in front of a sold-out, vocal Garden crowd. Taylor won by split decision in a result close enough that many ringside observers scored it differently.

The event was widely credited with proving women's boxing could sell out major arenas and headline premium broadcast cards on its own merits, accelerating a wave of high-profile women's fights that followed. Taylor and Serrano fought two further rematches in the years afterward, extending one of the sport's defining modern rivalries.
