Chicago trailed the Utah Jazz by one point with under a minute to play in game six of the 1998 NBA Finals, a series the Bulls led three games to two. Jordan first scored to put Chicago ahead, then, on the next Utah possession, stole the ball back from Karl Malone in the post.
He walked the ball up the floor, took a couple of dribbles to create space against defender Bryon Russell, and rose for a jump shot from the top of the key with 5.2 seconds left. It dropped through clean, Chicago won by a single point, and it was Jordan's sixth NBA championship in six Finals appearances, each ending in a Finals MVP award.
It was also, for years, presumed to be his final shot in a Bulls uniform before his second retirement, cementing an ending that read like it had been scripted. The freeze-frame of his follow-through, arm extended after the release, remains one of the most reproduced images in basketball.
