Michael Phelps entered the 2008 Beijing Olympics chasing Mark Spitz's record of seven golds at a single Games, set in 1972. He won all eight of his events, a new individual Olympic record, several of them by margins that came down to fractions of a second.
The closest was the 100 metre butterfly, where Phelps trailed Serbia's Milorad Čavić for most of the race before a final half-stroke lunge at the wall won it by one hundredth of a second, a margin later confirmed by an underwater camera and touchpad data after Čavić's camp questioned the result.
By the time the medley relay closed out the meet, Phelps had eight golds from eight finals, all with world or Olympic records along the way in most of them. It remains the most gold medals won by any athlete at a single Olympic Games, summer or winter.
