The Atlanta Falcons led the New England Patriots 28-3 early in the third quarter of Super Bowl LI on 5 February 2017, a deficit no team had come back from in 50 previous Super Bowls, prompting parts of the Atlanta crowd to already be celebrating. New England's defence tightened while quarterback Tom Brady, throwing for a Super Bowl-record 466 yards, began chipping the lead down possession by possession.
A two-point conversion with just over a minute left tied the score at 28-28, sending the game to overtime for the first time in Super Bowl history. A crucial 23-yard catch by Julian Edelman, kept alive after the ball deflected off a defender's hands and fingertips just above the turf, sustained the tying drive, and running back James White punched in the winning touchdown on New England's overtime possession.
The 34-28 win completed the largest comeback in Super Bowl history by a wide margin and gave the Patriots their fifth championship of the Brady-Belichick era. It is routinely cited alongside the greatest sporting comebacks in any sport, not only American football.
