By 2017 Tiger Woods had fallen out of the world's top 1000 golfers, undergone a fourth back surgery, and been arrested for driving under the influence of prescription medication, footage that circulated widely at the time. A ninth major title, let alone a competitive career, looked implausible.
At the 2019 Masters, fourteen years after his previous green jacket, Woods held his nerve through a chaotic final round in which several contenders around him made costly errors on the par-3 12th hole. He played it safely himself and closed out a one-shot win, his first major championship since 2008.
The roar around Augusta's back nine as it became clear he would win again was one of the loudest in the tournament's history, and the image of Woods embracing his own children by the 18th green, echoing a famous photo with his late father from 1997, closed the loop on one of the most complete comebacks in modern sport.
